Association for Experiential Education
2008 West Regional Conference
SUSTAINABILITY in
EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION -
MAKE THE LEAP!
February 29-March 2, 2008
Sly Park Environmental Education and
Conference Center
The theme of this year’s conference is
Sustainability: this word has found its way into the conversations of many educators and professionals this year. Many of these conversations have centered on the topic of environmental sustainability, questioning how we interact with and impact the natural environment, and how this interaction must change immediately in order to reverse the trend of destruction or misuse. It is important to remember that this term is not limited to the environment, but includes social, personal, economic, and educational sustainability as well.
In education, the methods of teaching the topic of sustainable living are being discovered, revisited, reinvented, and measured in many ways. The United Nations has declared the next ten years as the decade for sustainability education. California has mandated that sustainability themes be part of all K-12 curricula. This is just a brief example of how this topic directly affects, and is directly affected by, both education and other related professions.
- How is experiential education sustainable?
- How does experiential education contribute to sustainability?
- What are the economic impacts of sustainability for experiential education?
- How will the ideas of sustainability change our processes and affect our clients, staff, and families?
We would like to engage you, and see you engage, in a powerful discussion of specific theme areas that can make this year’s conference shine as an example of excellence for our Region and our Association.
